Keynote Speaker

The Keynote Speaker for the Institute is Philip Deaver, Writer-in-Residence at Rollins College, and his address is open to the public, free of charge.  He will launch the week’s activities at 2:15-3:30 PM on Sunday, May 17, in the Gleason Center.  Deaver is the 13th winner of the Flannery O’Connor Award for Short Fiction for his book,  Silent Retreats.  His work has been recognized in Prize Stories: The O. Henry Awards and by the Pushcart Prize.  Deaver also writes poetry, and his new book, How Men Pray, is the recipient of critical acclaim.  He has recently edited a book of creative nonfiction essays on baseball, Scoring from Second: Writers on Baseball.

Panelists will address writers from every genre and level of experience. Let the experts give you the inspiration and know-how to succeed. In attendance will be Valerie Allen (children's literature writer and author of Write, Publish, Sell), Cindi Courbat (journalist and professor), Jocelyn Bartkevicius (editor of the literary journal Florida Review), and Annette Clifford (anthologized fiction writer, editorial writer, and columnist of Florida Today).

Writing for Independent Film and Comics

Terry Cronin, Jr. MD, co-founder and program chairman for the Melbourne Independent Filmmakers Festival and founder of 3 Boys Productions, will provide the basics of screenwriting for independent film and offer hints on how to successfully make an independent film. Dr. Cronin is also the creator and publisher of the comic horror adventure series, Students of the Unusual, and he will provide the basics of creative writing for comic books and offer hints in how to successfully complete a graphic novel. The lecture will be followed by the movie screening in Rathkseller at 9:15 PM.

This lunchtime lecture deals with the issue of creativity itself: its meaning, its necessity, and how  the writer might invite it.  Dr. Shearer will discuss ways in which creative ideas came together to produce his 2008 novel The Beethoven Years.

True Crime Writing

Anna Flowers will present from 3:45-4:45 PM about her experience writing on Florida and Southern crime: from serial killers to vigilantes.  Her books include Blind Fury (a Doubleday True Crime Book Club lead selction: it's about Gerald Stano, who killed 41 women in Central Florida), Bound to Die (a Literary Guild selection and subject of documentary: the case of Bobby Joe Long of Tampa),  Murder At Wayside Antiques (about a double homicide in an antique shop north of Ocala).and Wanton Woman (her most recent work, which is the story of vigilante justice in South Carolina).

Friday Luncheon

Martha Powers, author of fourteen popular fiction novels, will talk about the journey to publication. Using her latest suspense thriller, CONSPIRACY OF SILENCE, she will detail how ideas generate stories. Starting with the idea, she will talk about the proposal, the sale and ultimately the marketing of the book. She will open the discussion to the audience, answering questions about the real life situations encountered in getting books published in today's financial market.

Edmund Skellings, Ph.D. will discuss from 3:30-4:30PM the application of computer animation and surround sound to augment traditional and non-traditional poetry.  He will show his own three dimensional animated poetry in an award-winning
collection entitled "Word Songs."
