Presenters

Science Café Format - Overview

1. The Science Cafés are scheduled from 5:45pm – 7:45pm. We start the Program at 6:00pm. You can come earlier and order food and drinks.

2. The Cafés moderator (Dr. Rassoul from Florida Institute of Technology or Mr. Winsten from the Brevard Zoo) can bring a laptop for you to use, if needed. Our meeting room has a 42 inch flat screen TV with VGA input so the laptop can be connected directly to the TV. The moderator gives a brief (2-3 minute) introduction of the evening’s event, including introducing the speaker and the topic.

3. If presenters request it ahead of time, the moderator can bring a short 10-minute clip from the relevant NOVA Science Now Segment, if available. The presenter can use a similar video clip of their choice.

4. Presenters should bring their MS PowerPoint slides on a CD or memory stick. The main talk, after the video clip, should be about 20-30 minutes. This should be fairly extemporaneous and engaging – a conversation starter. It usually ends with questions to the audience like “What do you think about this …?”

5. Presenters field questions and comments from the audience as long as there is a focus in the room. The moderator helps facilitate the conversation. Typically, these conversations go on for about 30 minutes or so.

6. The moderator ends the formal part of the evening and collects evaluations/suggestions from the audience. People continue to talk in smaller groups and/or with the speaker.
